The M1 helmet is an emblematic element of the paratroopers of the 506th PIR during Operation Market Garden. Designed to protect soldiers, this helmet is equipped with an original small mesh net, a reproduction first aid kit and an Inland version fiber liner and its Rigger Made chin chup. It is representative of the helmets worn by the paratroopers of the 101st Airborne during the parachute operation over Holland.

About

US WW2 paratrooper helmet shell in steel of Austrian origin produced between 1975 and 1990. Rear seam and swivel loops. The shell was repainted in matte OD (Olive Drap), a color used by the American army between 1936 and 1944, and equipped with reproductions of helmet paratrooper chinstraps in khaki-colored canvas OD#3. This shell is painted in the colors of an officer of the 2nd Battalion of the 506th PIR of the 101st Airborne Division and patinated for an aged and authentic effect.

Surplus helmet liner in compressed fiber of Belgian origin (ABL). With sweatband, brown leather chinstrap and neck band. The liner also has the front eyelet typical of American liners. Modified in Inland paratrooper version with the addition of "A Yokes" in OD#3 color and its rigger made fabric chin cup.

Painting "Battle Battered" 506th PIR Market Garden

The paint used on this Battle Battered version is the same as our other helmets. This is an Olive Drab dyed used by the US army between 1936 and 1944. The insignia of the 506th parachute infantry regiment is patinated like the rest of the shell.

The texture of the "cork" is crushed and patinated in order to give a worn effect to the helmet. This is an aspect found on the original US M1 helmets.

"Battle Battered" 506th PIR Market Garden

The 506th PIR's mission was to capture the bridge over the Wilhelmina Canal at Son, then move south towards Eindhoven to secure four bridges over the Dommel River. However, on the 17th, none of these tasks were completed. Despite their rapid assembly and march towards Son, their advance was halted by a German 88mm cannon in the center of the town.

In this American factory, thousands of M1 helmets were pressed, inspected, and painted to equip the Allied forces. A symbol of American industrial ingenuity, the M1 helmet was mass-produced starting in 1941, combining manganese steel and technical innovation.
