Complete infantry helmet with an original post-war Dutch shell, accompanied by a German-made fiber liner. The shell is equipped with swivel bales and has been repainted in the configuration of a first lieutenant of the 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, with the battalion insignia, the ace of spades, worn on the back, as observed in photographic documents from the Italian campaign and Operation Dragoon. The Battle Battered finish recreates the appearance of equipment worn in the field.

Offered complete with a 1960s German army fiber helmet liner, an early war raised bar helmet chinstrap, and a reproduction leather chinstrap stamped with the "HAGERSTOWN LEATHER COMPANY" mark.

About

Shell

The helmet has been repainted in the documented configuration of an officer of the 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, with the ace of spades applied to the rear of the shell, the battalion insignia as it appears in photographs taken during the Italian campaign and Operation Dragoon in 1944. The battle-battered finish replicates the appearance of paint exposed to field conditions: localized chipping, edge wear, and an overall patina consistent with equipment used in prolonged campaigns.

Liner Fiber

The liner is a post-war German-made fiber model, fully reassembled. The neck band support is unfolded, the A washers are blackened brass. The headband is fitted with a black buckle and black clips. The liner chinstrap is leather, with a black buckle and black studs, the whole showing a homogeneity of color and materials consistent with the assembly standards observed on these liners.

"Battle Battered" 3rd ID 7th Infantry Regiment 1st Battalion 1st Lt

On August 15, 1944, the 3rd Infantry Division landed on the coast of Provence as part of Operation Dragoon, opening a second Allied front in southern France. The 7th Infantry Regiment, spearheading the division nicknamed "Rock of the Marne," quickly advanced inland, pushing through German defenses along the Rhône Valley. This campaign followed over a year of fighting in the Mediterranean—Sicily, Anzio, Monte Cassino—which forged the unit's cohesion and combat methods. Battalion markings worn on helmets, including the spade emblem of the 1st Battalion, allowed for rapid identification in the field, particularly during regrouping phases after landings and breakthroughs. The 3rd Division reached Germany in the spring of 1945, having covered over 2,000 kilometers since the African beaches of 1942, a record combat distance for a US infantry division during the Second World War.

A bit of history

In this American factory, thousands of M1 helmets were pressed, inspected, and painted to equip the Allied forces. A symbol of American industrial ingenuity, the M1 helmet was mass-produced starting in 1941, combining manganese steel and technical innovation. This video demonstrates the intensity of the war effort mobilized on American soil.
