About

Shell

US WW2 infantry steel helmet shell of Austrian origin, produced between 1950 and 1990. Rear rim seam and fixed loops. The shell has been repainted in matt OD (Olive Drab), the colour used by the US Army between 1936 and 1944, and fitted with reproduction infantry steel helmet chinstraps in khaki OD#3 webbing. This shell is painted in the markings of officer Hugh A. Mozley, Battalion Executive Officer of the 326th Engineer Bn, 101st Airborne Division, until 13 June 1944.

Liner Fiber

Surplus compressed-fibre liner of German origin (Wachbataillon). Fully reassembled with headband, brown leather chinstrap and neckband. The liner also has the front eyelet typical of American liners. Converted to an Inland paratrooper version with OD#3 A-yokes and a leather chin cup.

Painting "Battle Battered" 326th Engineer Bn Major Hugh A. Mozley

The paint used on this Battle Battered version is the same as on our other helmets: an Olive Drab shade used by the US Army between 1936 and 1944. The 326th Engineer Bn insignia and the rear CO rank are weathered like the rest of the shell.

The "cork" texture has been crushed and weathered to give the helmet a worn look. This is an appearance found on original US M1 helmets.

"Battle Battered" 326th Engineer Bn Major Hugh A. Mozley

Major Hugh A. Mozley took command of the 326th Airborne Engineer Battalion after the death of Lt-Col John Pappas in June 1944. At the head of his unit, he supported the 101st Airborne during Market Garden, then strengthened the defences of Bastogne in December 1944. Under his command, the engineers laid mines and obstacles to slow the enemy and secure American positions. Their bravery earned them two Presidential Unit Citations, testifying to the crucial role of combat engineers in the Allied victory.
